A cast of characters sits upon the ledge
Each one is guardian to an aspect of my soul
Carefully placed, away from the edge
I look to them for guidance; that is their role

He that smiles lets me accept my joy
He that frowns encourages me to try anew
He with the silly grin is the playful envoy
And she says find beauty in the morning dew

The bird with outspread wings to relish life
And gentleness expressed by tender fawn
To turtle, slow and steady brings no strife
And rooster marks the glory of day's dawn

This cast of characters helps to lift my soul
At least that's their effect if not their goal
