Splendor in the Punjab

An Indian Wedding

Atop the jeweled elephant
Riding to her triumphant
For he has won the right
To make of her his bride

And she in silken layers
Bright and jeweled
With bangles of ivory and gold
And henna adornments

You are my raja
You are my ranee
The gods bless us
Our hands are bound

We circuit the sacred fire
In our seven steps
Under the mandap for
All to witness our union

Now the feast and dancing
Will soon begin anew
We take more steps
To sit on the Wedding Throne
United beneath the Indian sky
